SCHOOL DENTISTRY.
UPKEEP OF CLINICS. CONTRIBUTIONS BY FUBUO. SERVICE FEES PROPOSED. (From Our Own Correspondent.} WELLINGTON, Sunday. Some contributions by the public for the upkeep of school dental clinics are practically certain to be demanded by the Government in the near future, in accordance with its policy of reducing the cost of State social services. It is stated that the heavy cost of dental clinics, which are non-productive, has ; led the Government to offset the charges incurred in their conduct by making it obligatory upon those who take advantage of the services offered to pay something toward their maintenance. There is even a suggestion that a system of charging, either directly or indirectly, for the treatment given should be introduced. It-is believed that the question has received the attention of the Economy Committee, although the intentions of the Government have so far not been disclosed. It is learned that by curtailing the expenditure upon dental, clinics the Government will make it necessary for funds to be secured from other sources, and that to make up the difference those who are at present receiving free treatment will be called upon to pay a portion of the cost.
