DAMAGE TO PROPELLER. WATER UNDER CONTROL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Union Company's steamer, Kini, reported by radio at 11.30 o'clock last night that she struck a submerged object in the vicinity of Bare Island. The Kini's bilges began to leak and the propeller was damaged. The water, however, v is well under control. There was a dense fog when the mishap occurred. The latest report states that the Kini is anchored off Napier. Bare Island is marked on the chart as Motukura and is 12J miles south of Cape Kidnappers and 16 miles from Napier. The island is about two miles off the mainland. The Kini is the latest addition to the Union Company's fleet, having arrived at Wellington from Aberdeen, where she was ibuilt, on February 22. Ordered originally by R.. S. Lamb and Company, she "was purchased by the Union Company, along with the other vessels of the Lamb fleet, while still on the stocks and was brought out by Captain Williams. The Kinf"?s a 1388-ton steamer, specially designed for the carriage of timber in long lengths, and has two hatches, with the engines amidships. She has not yet visited Auckland, having been engaged chiefly in the Westport-Wel-lington trade, though she has also made one trip to Australia.

MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)' WELLINGTON", this day. As the result of a preliminary inquiry conducted by the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine on Tuesday into the cause iof the mishap to the Port Hobart, off Turakarae Head, it has been decided to hold a magisterial inquiry on the vessel's return from her round of ports, including Port Chalmers, where permanent repairs are to be made.
