FINANCE BILL.
PASSED BY LEGISLATIVE, COUNCIL. ALL AMENDMENTS DEFEATED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) '■ WELLINGTON, Friday. The Finance Bill was considered in committee to-day by the Legislative Council. The Hon. M. Fagan (Westland) moved an amendment with the object of stipulating that the Arbitration Court should take into account a fair standard of living for workers. The Leader, Sir Thomas Sidey, said he , could not accept the amendment, which was defeated by 22 votes to 4, those supporting it being the Hons. C. J. Carrington, W. Earnshaw, M. Fagan and W. H. Mclntyre. Sir. Mclntyre moved an amendment that the Court should not reduce wages by more than 10 per cent, and this also was defeated by 22 votes to 4. Moving the third reading Sir Thomas Sidey referred to the Post Office Depreciation Reserve Fund, which stood at £1,300,000. The Government considered it unwise to use this reserve, as no business firm would countenance profits being distributed instead of being devoted to depreciation. The bill was read a third time on the voices, and the Council adjourned until Wednesday. . The House of Representatives this evening received tlie Finance, Bill from the Council Without amendment.
