THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.

Make sowings of Turnips, Beet, Lettuce, Radish. Sow Onions for planting out in spring. A clean, firm seed bed is required. Sowings of Cabbage and Cauliflower can be made. Where there are plants available put out a few rows of Cabbage, etc. Lettuce can be transplanted, but where this is done lift the plants with a trowel so as to avoid breaking the roots. Lift and harvest crops of Kumaras and Potatoes as they mature. To leave them in the soil is to cause them to deteriorate in quality. Earth up Celery as it requires it. Pull off any side shoots and bad leaves before putting the soil round the plants. Forking over the surface between standing crops is the best method of getting rid of weeds at this season of the year. All vacant ground should be dug over or sown down in oats or some other cover crop for green manure. Trenching is one of the best manures for vegetable growing. When trench digging always break up the bottom of the trench with the fork. <? Make a sowing of Spinach. This quickly comes to a gsable size and it has medicinal properties. Make a sowing of Shorthorn Carrots for winter use. Do not forget that sowing or planting on raised beds gives better drainage and raises the temperature of the soil—both great advantages to winter crops.
