TANGOWAHINE LINE.

DARGAVILLE HOPEFUL. STATION AT AWAKINO ? OFFICIAL REPLY AWAITED* (From Our Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, Friday. A report that' a start had been made to pull up the sleepers and rails on the unballasted portion of the railway between Tangowahine and - a point near Wharau. about four miles from Dargaville, was received yesterday by Mr. F. A. Jones, Mayor of Dargayillie.

Upon receiving the report Mr. Jones communicated with the headquarters of the Public Works Department, at Whangarei, protesting that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works had been promised that nothing would be done until a personal investigation had been made, and that there would be a stay in proceedings until the result of the investigation was to hand. The Mayor also telegraphed to the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, member for the district, who replied that having seen the Minister, arrangements had been made to continue the service and ballast the line from Tangowahine to Mr. Edwin Harding's property. Mr. Coates also staled that the Minister's reply to the request of a deputation which waited on the Acting-Prime Minister in December was to follow. The .Mayor is hopeful that the .line will be finished either to the borough boundary or to a point about a mile toward Tangowahine at Awakino Point racecourse. Should the line be finished to the borough boundary, the railhead will be only a mile from the post office or to the Awakino Point station site, two miles from the town. The town will be quite satisfied if the line is finished to either of these points, and are satisfied that the returns would justify the completion of the remaining gap of one and a half miles to Dargaville, and connecting up with the 25 miles of the Kailiu line..
