A BIG PROJECT.
! MELBOURNE OIL REFINERY. The Vacuum Oil Company has completed negotiations with the Minister oi Lmia in Victoria for the purchase of 100 acres of -Crown land at Melbourne, the price fixed being £50,000. Parliament will require ;o pass a bill ratifying the sale, and under -he contract the Vacuum Oil Company undertakes to expend m preparing the site and on the erection of buildings, olant, and machinery, approximately £885.000, of which £554,000 is to be spent, within nine months from the time Parlia- ' ment passes the bilL It is proposed to erect on this land a large modern plant for the refining of petroleum, thereby making it unnecessary r'or the company to import the finished oroduct. The refined spirit will be distributed to all parts of Australia from the wprks at Port Melbourne.
