TOWN PLANNING LESSON.
SHOPPING AT NAPIER.
"A REVELATION," SAYS MR,
MAWSON.
Napier's community shopping centre was referred to in terms of high praise by Mr. J. W. Mawson, director of town planning, during the hearing of an appeal to-day by the Auckland Transport Board against the Auckland City Council's refusal of a permit for the disposal of the old Ponsonby tram barn site for business purposes.
"Down at Napier they srave a practical lesson in town planning which is a revelation," said Mr. Mawson. "They have one of the finest things I have seen in any town—the creation of a community shopping centre. The people are finding it a tremendous convenience, and when the time comes to dispose of the temporary buildings there will be an outcry, because they have the whole of the present shopping facilities of Napier concentrated in a small area at the .junction of the main roads. It is one of the finest lessons in practical town planning I have ever come across in my life."
