AVONDALE TRAMS.
TENDERS FOR EXCAVATIONS.
BRIDGE OVER RAILWAY.
QUESTION OF LIABILITY.
Tenders close on Monday for excavations in connection with the tramway extension to Avondale, and, to expedite the work, the Auckland Transport Board will call a special meeting to consider them.. This information was given to the board by the chairman (Mr. J. A. C. Allum) this morning after he had explained what the position was in connection with the track to be constructed over the railway line close to the Avondale station.
Mr. Allum said that, accompanied by two other members of the board, he had interviewed the works committee of the City Council with a request that the bridge should be so planned and altered that it would carry a double line of rails instead of a single line, as originally contemplated. As . a result, the city engineer was to be instructed to prepare plans for a new bridge. He had informed the committee of the board's willingness to contribute an amount corresponding with the board's responsibility, but he wished it to be understood that the board was not building the bridge. Mr. E. J. Phelan: I hope we are not actually committed to pay anything towards the cost of the bridge. I have no recollection of the board giving any expression of opinion. 1 Mr. Allum said that the bridge had to be strengthened, and the board would be liable to pay something. Mr. Phelan: Well, in that case, we must have an obligation in regard to roads. Mr. Allum: We have. The report of the chairman was adopted.
