BELOW SEA LEVEL.
QUEST FCR ARTESIAN FLOW,
PAPATOETOE INVESTIGATIONS,
A decision to sink a bore to a depth at which a supply would be available without seasonal variations was made by the Papatoetoe Town Board last evening. The engineers were authorised to carry out investigations to a maximum depth of 800 ft. Papatoetoe is supplied by underground springs, which were tapped two years ago, about 50ft below the surface in the vicinity of McLaughlin Mountain. J.his flow is slightly above the sea level, in rock country. Later investigations which the board has carried out in a desire to obtain sufficient water for the needs of the adjoining parts of the Manukau County as well have been confined to the same level. The board Was advised that a oin bore had been sunk by private interests in the northern part of the Papatoetoe district to a depth of ] 200 ft in a quest for an artesian flow, and pumping tests had proved that this bore could supply 5000 gallons an hour. The water was of a high staiulaid of purity, and its normal level was only 20ft below the surface. Boring operations will be carried out by the board at a site 140 ft north ji the present well.
