GRANTS TO SCHOOLS.
INCREASED RATE SOUGHT. SCHOOL COMMITTEES' DECISIONS. i A decision to again urge the Educa-1 tion Department and the Auckland Education Board to increase the capitation grants to school committees was made by the Primary School Committees' Association last evening. The Dargaville District High School Committee complained of lack of finance to carry on the ordinary cleaning operations at the local school. The wisdom of seekipg additional allowances for schools at present was questioned by Mrs. N. S. Benfell. The chairman, Mr. S. E. Chappell, also thought that the present was hardly an appropriate time to ask for increased capitation. The executive recommended that when teachers who had left the teaching service rejoined they should be given temporary appointments for regradingi purposes. Mr. Chappell said that it i was felt that if this practice were J adopted, it would give the inspectors an opportunity of arriving at the exact grading of teachers returning to the service. Mr. G. Brownlee said all that was desired was that the Department should make sure of a teacher's qualifications before regrading. The matter was referred to the executive for further consideration.
