Mrs. C. M. Croft, of Arney Road, Remuera, was hostess at a tea held in the lounge of the Lyceum Club yesterday afternoon in hotfotir' o'f 'Mrs. 'Brodie, who is a visitor to Auckland from Canada. Bowls of brightly-coloured flowers decorated the lounge, and Mrs. Croft received her guests Wearing a frock of bottle green crepe de chine with black ballibuntal hat. Sirs. Brodie was in a nattier blue ensemble, with smart.toqup to tone. Among the guests were: Lady Sinclair Lockhart, Mesdamcs A. A.. MfU": tin, Essex, W. H. Boyle, T. li. Macfarlane, J. J. Kingston, Carter, H.. Steaji.man, Hawkins, Priestman, P. Upton and Miss Buckerfield. • • • • A fancy dress novelty evening took place at Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bailey's residence, Symonds Street, last Wednesday. There were many charming dresses worn, including .Eastern, period and modern costumes. Mrs. Bailey received her guests in a frock of gold and silver, representing Sunrise. During the evening songs, monologues and sketches were given, and dancing enjoyed. A grand guignol play in shadowgraph, representing a burlesque operation, was given by Messrs. Tidswell, Botting and Bailey. Among the guests present were Meodames G. M. Pine (Christchurch), G. Taylor, E. Malcolm, P. N. Ambler; N. Kerr, F. Campbell, Misses B. Walker, B. O'Connor, M. Pine, M. Yorke, 11. Walker, P. Hawley and I. O'Connor. * » • ♦ ♦ A social, arranged by the Otahuhu Free Kindergarten, in aid of their building fund, was held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a large gathering of parents and friends, and a very enjoyable evening was spent in dancing and competitions. Jtfovelty dances and items by the •kindergarten children were especially appreciated. Two elocutionary numbers were given by Mr. J. H. M. Andrew, Irish jig and encore by Miss Mary Colledge, and two songs by Mrs. Wood. The competition was won by Mrs. Pee, Monte Carlo, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold, 1; and Miss Simpson and Mr. Wylie, 2. Violin solos were given by Miss K. French. Mr. Pilchard, the chairman of the committee, thanked all who had assisted to make the social successful. * * * A very jolly party wa£ given on Tuesday evening by Mrs. Cyril Towsey at her home in City Road, in honour of the 21st birthday of her niece, Miss Kathleen Cooper. The rooms were delightfully decorated with bowls containing brown and gold dahlias and on the sup° per tables were mauve and purple asters. Mrs. Towsey received the guests, wearing a frock of black lace and georgette, and Mies Cooper was in a silver and blue sequinned frock. Mrs. Cooper wore black and pink embossed georgette. During the evening dancing was enjoyed and a very happy time was spent by all. Among those present were: Mesdames Cunningham, P. O'Connor, Newdick, B. O'Connor, Cantwell, F. Haigh, Simmonds, Misses Mollie Atkinson, Norah Brodie, Aimee Clapham, Norah Howe, Zcllah Simmers, Eileen O'Connor, Mollie Simmonds, M. and N. O'Connor, Lamb. » • ♦ » The opening meeting of the 1931 seaeon of the Overseas League was held in the league's rooms last evening, when a large attendance of members was presided over by Mr. F. G. de Guerrier. A lecture on "The Romance of Music" was given by Mr. Alfred Eady and occupied the major portion of the evening. Mr. Eady traced the vast development of music and musical instruments from earliest days. The evolution of the modern musical instrument from those of ancients down to those of the present time was illustrated by many interesting lantern slides. The various groups, mechanical, wind, percussion and string were traced through the ages from Greek, Siamese, Egyptian, Assyrian and varied Eastern sources. Mr. Eady was assisted in the demonstration of his subject by .Mr. Arthur Eady and Mr. Archie Donn. Supper was later served by the members of the ladie<» committee.

The Papatoetoe Meth'odist Ladies' Social League held a cobweb evening in the Methodist Hall, Papatoetoe, on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. After the unwinding of the cobweb a programme of community games was carried out, and competitions were held, which were won by Mr. E. 11. Burton and Miss Carol Brittain. Supper was provided by the members of the league. Mrs. John Sanderson acted as accompanist.
