FRESH WATER SPRINGS
SUBMARINE OCCURRENCE,
CIRCLE ROUND PANIA REEF
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
NAPIER, Monday,
An extraordinary submarine occurrence caused by the earthquake has been the opening of cold fresh water springs in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, as there are large areas on the surface where fresh water has been obtained. Six ; springs have appeared, situated in a circle round Pania Reef, a few miles off the Bluff at Napier. The shallowest spot in the vicinity has a depth of 6ft, and the reef falls nway on all sides to depths of from 42ft to (32ft from this location. Where the sea is about seven fathoms de"p fresh water springs have been gushing, some of them being plainly visible, and it can be seen that they are at least two feet in diameter.
It is some weeks since the spot was visited, an inspection having been made by the Napier harbourmaster,' Captain H. White-Parsons, the engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, Mr. F. W. Furkert, and the Government geologist, Dr. Henderson, a few days after the earthquake. At that time the water from the springs was quite fresh, but it is not known whether the springs arc still flowing.
