SOUTHERN GOSSIP.
CANTERBURY EASTER MEETING.
CHRISTCHURCH, Monday,
Indications point to the Canterbury Jockey Club having two good days at Easter There are twenty-one horses in the Great Easter Handicap, including seven from the North Island and four from I southern centres. Limerick, Jaloux, Don Jose, Spoon, True Shaft and Charmeuse, however, have other engagements on the same day. The fifteen honses in the Great Autumn include four from the North Island and three from the iSouth.
The Great Easter and Great Autumn double is not easily won, as tlw records show. Nightmarch, Jaloux, Vortigern Compris, Ivhhikitoa and Mount Boa figure in both races this year. The Champagne Stakes looks like attracting a good field. Twelve horses have been left in, among them being Golden Wings, Esteem, Oratorian, Riehborougll and Gay Court, from the North Island, also' Last March and Fair Weather from Wingatui. To oppose those visitors Riccarton has Cricket Bat, Tautbow, Ma Belle Polly and The Quorn. Of the local lot Cricket Bat makes most appeal at present.
The two-year-olds make a bold showing in the Challenge Stakes, but the star candidates there are NightmaHi and Silver Paper. The prospects are that Silver Paper will be a tough nut for the juveniles to crack at seven fuulongs, as he has not earned a penalty.
Sir Charles Clifford, in addition to racing a number of horses at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Easter meeting, will send Straightcourse and Winsome Hind to Wairarapa. The former will be more severely tried out, but his chance cannot be overlooked, while I expect to sec Winsome Hind get some money, as she is a smart hack sprinter.
