"A DEATH TRAP."
NEW TRAMWAY BRIDGE.
SINGLE TRACK PROPOSED
AVONDALE ROUTE STRUCTURE,
*T can see that this approach is going to be a death trap," declared Mr. E. Morton at this morning"? meeting of the Auckland Transport Board, when the manager (Mr. A. E. Ford) reported that it was intended to construct a single line of tramway over the railway bridge on the Mount Albert-Avondale tramway extension. The bridge was to bo strengthened by the Railway Department at the board's expense, and the requisite minimum clearances would ba given, added Mr. Ford. The Railway Department reported that the works committee of the City Council' objected to the board's proposals, and urged that a clearance of 10 feet should be given on the bridge. The proposal to construct the line was in accordance with the usual safeguards. As it was desirable that an early decision should be made in the matter, Mr. Ford recommended that a conference be held between the board and the council to determine the issue. Members of the board expressed the opinion that the City Council should widen the bridge to make provision for the transport service. It was argued that the board could not reasonably be expected to build bridges over railways. The chairman (Mr. J. A. C. Allum) and Messrs. L. E. Rhodes and E. H. Potter were appointed to represent the board at a conference with the council to arrive at some agreement in respect to the bridge.
