FIRES AT TAUPIRI.
HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED.
FAMILY AWAY AT CHURCH.
EFFORTS BY NEIGHBOURS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
TAUPIRI, Sunday.
A louse in Taupiri, on the Great South Road, owned and occupied by Mr. A. Murphy, was totally destroyed by lire this morning. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The fire was noticed from the neighbouring house and the alarm given. An entrance was forced by neighbours, but the helpers were met by volumes of smoke and flames from b-ick and front of the building.
It was not known at the time whether members of the Murphy family were still in bed. Later, however, it was discovered that the whole familyl, including several small children, were attending early morning service.
The contents of a detached washhouse and garage were rescued, but these buildings were too near the main building to prevent their catching fire. Consequently the place was destroyed.
When the family returned from church they found their home flaming to the roof. The house is insured.
