PLIGHT OF WORKLESS
Demand for Special Session of
U.S. Congress.
6,050,000 UNEMPLOYED.
WASHINGTON, March 22.
Senator W. E. Borah (Republican, Idaho) has demanded that the President, Mr. Hoover, shall call a special session of Congress to deal with unemployment as a result of an announcement by the Department of Commerce that 6,050,000 people were unemployed in the United States in January.
The so-called progressive membc.s of both parties in the Senate support Mr. Borah. They claim that the figures indicate that 20,000,000 people, comprising the families of those who arc unemployed, are suffering as a result of the situation. They have given warning that to wait until Congress is regularly convened next December will be too late to avert the worst disaster in the history of the nation.
