WOOL TRADE.

GREAT ANIMATION

BRITISH BUYERS LEAD WAY,

CONTINENTAL CENTRES ACTIVE

(Received 10.30 a.m.)

LONDON, March 22

Mr. Devereuz, the Australian woolgrowers' representative, reports great animation in the trade. Prices for all descriptions are well maintained, and British buyers continue to lead the way. There is an increase in Continental competition, France, Belgium and Germany securing a share of the offerings. Withdrawals are negligible. Rumours are current that there are possibilities that the Budget may include the imposition of an import duty on manufactured goods for revenue purposes. This, although considered somewhat doubtful, combined with the increasing activity of trade in Yorkshire, is stimulating British buyers. . The strong position in London continues to affect the Bradford market. Merino crossbred tops again advanced, and business was done at increased prices. As the result of the strong market and cheerful tone the prices of tops in Germany improved, and there were considerable sales of Merino and crossbred. Belgian reports are fairly satisfactory, with tops moving freely. At Antwerp the futures market is active, with quotations advanced. Tops in France have advanced to the same extent as other centres. There have been good advances at Roubaix. The futures market is active at an advance of 5 per cent.
