LOWER COSTS.
FARMERS' PROPOSALS,
GOVERNMENT URGED TO ACT
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
MORRINSVILLE, Saturday.
Resolutions designed to bring about a lowering of the cost of living and the cost of production were carried unanimously at a meeting of 100 farmers at Morrinsville to-day. Mr. G. H. Pirritt, president of the Morrinsville branch of the Farmers' Union, presided, and a number of directors of district dairy companies were present. One resolution called for the reduction of the cost of Government, so as to allow of a reduction of £2,000,000 in taxation. Another asked for a reduction of 25 per cent in the Customs tariff with a view to reducing the cost of living._ A third suggested the temporary suspension of the Arbitration Court awards to allow of workers accepting such wages as industries now afford to pay.
The derating of farm lands and the provision of all moneys for road work by means of taxation on petrol and tyres, etc., was advocated in another resolution. Speakers contended that the present system of road finance was in a state of chaos, and that, derating, as in Britain and Denmark, was the only practicable solution.
