DELAYED BY PIGS.
TOFUA SAILS LATE,
If pigs could subsist comfortably without food for a week it is likely that the Island steamer Tofua would have sailed for Fiji punctually at 11 lo'clock this morning. It was nearer mid-day before the ship got away. At various times in her career the Tofua has been held up by firemen and waterside workers, but this is probably the first time that she has been delayed to satisfy a few families of pigs.
The Tofua often takes pigs to the Islands, and to-day there were 41 of them as passengers on deck. As companions for the voyage the pigs had several sheep, and the yapping of a dog could also be heard. Fodder for the sheep arrived when the last mails were being slung aboard, but the word then went round that the pigs had been forgotten. They could not be taken to sea without food and there was nothing to do but wait until it arrived.
