BOWLS AND BOWLERS.

SUMMER WEATHER STILL.

SOUTH AUCKLAND TEST.

A SHORTAGE OF ENTRIES,

(By TRUNDLER.)

The ideal weather for bowling last Saturday emphasises the hard luck experienced on Wednesday and Thursday for the champion of champions, for those who were in Queen Street all day can have no conception of the tricky wind that spoiled many a good bowl. It was quite a new experience for spectators in Auckland to see a player having to recover his balance as he stood on the mat, after being nearly blown off by a specially strong gust of wind, while occasionally a bowl did not even' finish in the right rink, although delivered on what looked like a perfect track. This suggests what they have to put up with in Wellington, where a bowl is sometimes set in motion again after coming to rest, while a mat often has to be brought back from where a miniature whirlwind has carried it.

Fortunately none of these things happened, but it might be worth considering whether it is wise to time this tournament for so near the equinox, when there is usually either wind or rain. Having occasion to remember autumn conditions over a long period of years, April weather has left the impression of being just a3 reliable as March, if* not more so, while it would confer the distinct advantage of not requiring the club championships to be hurried through at the early part of the season. At present nearly all the pleasure of the club championships, affecting anything from 20 to 60 members of each club, is virtually sacrificed for the one who eventually wins, in order to send him to Carlton in March, the result too often being that some of the best players in each club—keen green players—go out in the first two rounds, before the green is really in playable condition. The matter is certainly worth considering, with a view to ventilating it at the annual meeting of delegates to the centre. J. M. Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) won the Wellington champion of champions, defeating Brighting (Hataitai) in the final by 21 to 12. In the semi-final he defeated Glen (Island Bay) and Brighting defeated Porteou3 (Wellington). A Visit to South Auckland. A good response has been made to the call for volunteers to visit the Thames on Wednesday, to play the usual Test match against the South Auckland Centre, in return for the visit paid to Auckland on December 2. In one way this may also be regarded as a return of the visit to Auckland last January, to compete in the Dominion tournament, unless it is considered that that call has already been amply returned by those who went to Eotorua in February, with the Cambridge tournament during the coming Easter thrown in for full measure. ,

As the analysis of the Dominion tournament entries has never been published, it may be of interest to record the very fine support given by the neighbouring centre to the last two held in Auckland:—

Rinks from 1927. 1931 Auckland Centre 96 91 South Auckland Centre .... 12 12 Other N.I. Centres 40 30 South Island 20 10 Australia 2 3

The coming Test carries with it the Hardley Shield, possession of which during the ensuing twelve months will be settled in the usual way. The present position is that in the morning round last December there were 4J wins to Auckland and 3J to South Auckland, and in the afternoon 3 and 5 respectively, so South Auckland leads at present by one game. If Auckland should happen to win 8J games out of the 16 to be played on Wednesday, thus making a tie in games, the decision will o-o on points, and at present Auckland leads by ,the very narrow margin of four points, at 395 to 391. Altogether the position seems to be just as interesting as the final in the pennants, where Larlton led on points and on games, the latter winning the pennant on the very last bowl played, but it is a little too much to expect that there should be such a coincidence as for the Hardley Shield also to be won by the last bowl. Provincial Tournaments, The shortage of entries for the Easter tournament at Cambridge is only another sign of the times, being a very close repetition of the experience at Eotorua last month. The Cambridge committee was rather optimistic in arranging such an elaborate set of details by which it was going to' cut down the entries to 04, to find in the end that there are only 46. However, in each case, as in the Dominion tournament figures already shown, the obvious te'ndency is towards less travelling, and in each case the fairly obvious lesson is to cut out that objectionable bye, and give competitors a maximum amount of play, at a minimum loss of time, like they <"et at home. ' ' °

In each case the supply has proved above the demand, whereas there is less trouble to the officials, and more satisfactionvto the competitors who get in, when the supply is less than the demand. At Rotorua the management has received the hint that 55 entries are too many for the first tournament, and if they were cut down to 48, allowing four sections of 12, so that all would get eleven games instead of ten and a bye, the post-section play would run out more fairly with two semi-finals and a final team than it does with the present eliminating round, and there would also be ample time to, finish any games delayed by bad weather, while still allowing competitors to set off for Auckland or Wellington by the afternoon train on the Fridav. Any who could not get into the first tournament would probably be equally pleased to play m the second, lifting it more nearly to an equality with the first, instead of showing the present pronounced inferiority in numbers, although not in quality. At Cambridge the committee will doubtless consider the advisability of cutting down future entries to 48 or oven 40, so that all will get nine games with no bye, and the post-section play will run out more evenly than with six sections.

A good joke is told regarding one match at Rotorua last month, where the play was very keen and even. One skip was just going to play his last bowl extra carefully, being two down, when lie called out. "Where is: the jack?" Before' his third could indicate its position another member of the team picked it up, with the remark, '-Here it is!" Needless to say, the tension was infetantly relieved, and the play proceeded ai; a game, instead of a fight.
