SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A most enjoyable evening was given by Mrs. H. J. Wilson, Thome's Bay, Takapuna, on Saturday evening, the guests of honour being Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Williamson, of Takapuna, who are leaving the Dominion early next month to reside in Vancouver. Mrs. Wilson received wearing a frock of bronze gold taffeta, with spiral flares on the skirt. Dancing took up the greater part of the evening, with competitions as interludes. A dainty supper was served in the drawing-room. Among the guests were; Mesdames A. H. Williamson, Temple, R. Corson, Douglas Buehan, F. Knight, Misses Norma Freeman, Buddie, T. Thanbrian.

On Thursdav afternoon the Mount Eden branch o'f the Methodiet Women's Missionary Union held a garden party at "Fairview," the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Newcomb, Fairview Road, Mount Eden. The object of this function was to raise funds for mission work. A large and representative gathering assembled on the lawn. Here the ladies in charge of the bring and buy stall hail a very brisk and satisfactory hour. During the afternoon vocal solos were contributed by Mrs. Rattray and Miss Lilian Woods. After afternoon tea had been served, under the shade of the trees, opportunity was taken to farewell the Rev. E. Drake and Mrs. Drake. The Rev. S. J. Werren, president of the auxiliary, in a brief speech, spoke of the great regret felt "by the members of the Mount Eden Church at their near departure from Auckland. Mrs. Armrtage also spoke in farewell, and conveyed the thanks and appreciation of the, ladies to Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb for their courtesy in lending their beautiful grounds for the occasion. Un behalf of the ladies of the church Mrs. Armitage presented Mrs. Drake and Mrs. Xewcomb each with a choice bouquet. A twenty-first birthday dance was given in the Renown Hall, Papatoetoe, oh Saturday evening by Mr. and Mrs. A: G. Grinter, of Papatoetoe, to tnerr eldest daughter Gladys. There was a large gathering of relatives and friends. The hill was artistically decorated with pink and white streamers and large bowls of pink and white lilies were arranged on the supper table. A feature was the presentation by Mr. Grinter to the guest of honour of a large wooden kev on which the 86 guests present wrote their names. Several enjoyable songs were sung by Miss J. Smith, of Auckland. Competitions were won by Miss Grace Sevi and Mr. Harold Duncan, and Miss Gwelda Fitness and Mr. Jack Jones. A Monte Carlo waltz was won bv Mrs. C. James and. Mr. Jack Gillies. Mrs. Grinter received wearing a frock of gold lace and black georgette. Miss Gladvs Grinter's frock was of anklelength pink ring velvet and cream lace. Mrs. Hamlin, the president of the Mount Wellington Croquet Club, held an At Home on the club's lawns on Thursday last, for the members of the One Tree Hill Croquet Club. Mrs. Hamlin received the visitors, and welcomed them to the green. A dainty afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, which was beautifully decorated. Mrs. Daniels, the president of the One Tree Hill Croquet Club, thanked Mrs. Hamlin for the pleasant afternoon given to the visitors. Progressive croquet was played, the winners being:—A Section: Mrs. Gillies, 1; consolation, Miss Wlngate. B Section: Mrs. Brindle, 1; consolation, Mrs. McDonald. Among those present were: Mesdanies Daniels, Somervell, Bregmen, E. Wilson, Smallbone, McDonald, Hamlin, Gatward, Hay, Anderson, Dunn, May, Gillies, Cummings, Brindle, Dr. Gladys Eawley, Misses Wingate and Urquhart.

A surprise party visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. R, Julian, of Otangiwai, Matiere, on Thursday nightj when games and dancing were indulged in. A kitchen evening was given by Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Gillett at their residence, Great North Boad, Avondale, on Saturday, in honour of Miss Sabina Gardner, whose approaching marriage to Mr. P. Bichardson takes place shortly. Amongst those present were Mesdames R. H. Gardner, P. J. Morrish, E. Wilson, Misses J. Richardson, E. Gardner, C. Clarke, G. Harrington. » * * * On Thursday evening last the beautiful grounds of "Ensley," Pukekohe, presented a ju'etty sight with coloured lanterns and electric illuminations, when Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Wilkinson entertained their friends to celebrate the coming of age of their daughter Jean. The lounge, where supper was served, was artistically decorated with mauve streamers and flowers. Silver vases ot mauve and lavender asters were on the table, with a large birthday cake with 20 miniature silver keys. The twentyfirst key, of larger and similar design, was presented by Mr. Wilkinson to his daughter as a symbol of her majority. Messrs. Porter and Campbell also extended Dancing, miniature golf and games were enjoyed. Vocal and instrumental items were rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, Misses Radia King, Jean McArthur. Ina Stuart and Mr.°Kissling. Mrs. Wilkinson received wearing a gown of black silk lace with a pink carnation spray. Miss Wilkinson was in ivory satin beaute with diamante ornament. Scott, Joyce Munroe, Rita Roy and Jean Roy (Hamilton). s In honour of the return home of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Wilson, who have been on a visit abroad, a garden party was held in the garden at "The Wens, the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. C. Allum, Curran Street, Heme Bay, on Saturday afternoon. Tho function was organised by the women's branch of the Reform League, under the convenership of Mrs. E Smythe, and there was a good attendance of members. After the speeches, during which tributes were paid to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson by Mr. F. F. Hockly on behalf of the executive, Mr. Corson, on" behalf of the junior league, and Mr. j \ C. Allum, the guests were able to wander along the shady paths or make purchases at the various stalls which were set up here and there. On arrival the <mests were received by Mr. and Mrs. "Allum and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Allum wore an ensemble of beige crepe de chine and dark blue hat; Mrs. Wilson was in navy crepe fleuri with black Bangkok hat and fox furs. The stallholders were as follow: Afternoon tea, Mesdames N. G. Tremaine, G. K. Browne, G. Campbell, S. F. McClure, R. W. Corson, Misses T. and L. Tremaine; flowers, Mesdames Sim and F. Cornwall; sweets, Mesdames Henderson and F. G. Hammond; cakes, Mesdames B. W. Renwick, Graves and Poole; produce, Messrs. Walker and Poole; ice cream, Mrs. K. Cornwall; fide-show, Messrs. J. W. Kealy and M. W. Mc?/Me.

The Pupuke Golf Club held its official opening day for the coming season on Saturday, the perfect weather and the good attendance of members making it a very pleasant function. A mixed foursome was arranged for the afternoon's play, Miss Harty and Mr. Reeve sending in the best cards. The first ball of the season was played by the president, Mr. Minogue. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies' committee. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Julius Williamson, Minogue, Mowbray, Deighton, Allen, Foote, Winter, E. J. Close, H. Bowde'n, A. W. Clark, Edey, Beaumont, 1!. Chisholm, Herbert, D. Davidson, Curtis, Howe, B. A garden party was given on Saturday afternoon at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. Grant, Hampton Park, East Tamaki, in aid of the East Taniaki Anglican Church funds. It was a splendid afternoon and there was a good attendance. Archdeacon Hawkins thanked Mr. and Mrs. Grant for the use of their grounds. Afternoon tea was provided by a ladies' committee. Mrs. Wall was the winner of a novelty competition.

A delightful little farewell dinner party took place at Heme .Bay at the home of the Austrian Trade Commissioner, Mr. 0. J. Thedens, and Mrs. Thedens, in honour of Mr. Kurt Oli'enburg, journalist and author, who left by the Aorangi to-day on his return to Germany after spending several months in this country. He intends to visit the Dominion in two years, when he has completed several special books and carried out a lecture tour on the Continent. The New Zealand Government has supplied him with several films considered to be of value in advancing the trade and tourist interests of this Dominion.
