BLOCK OF SHOPS BURNED.
BLAZE AT STRATFORD
BRIGADE'S DIFFICULT TASK,
(Jsy Telegraph.—6wn Correspondent.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday,
A fire, which broke out at Stratford jarly this morning, destroyed the drapery store of J. W. Walker, Limited, and Mrs. W. Lonsdale's confectionery shop. Mrs. E. M. Loose's confectionery shop was seriously damaged. The two first-mentioned premises, which are owned by Mr. J. K. Amesbury,' were wooden, and blazed furiously. The stock and fittings of J. W. Walker, Limited, were insured for £5800, Mrs. Lonsdale's for £700, .aid Mrs. Loose's for £350. The crackling of the fire awakened persons occupying premises near at hand. The fire brigade round the three premises, which were under one root, a mass of flames at the back, and before the fire was under control the two shops had been reduced to ashes, and the third gutted. Strenuous work by the brigade prevented the fire from spreading further in the continuous lime of buildings.
