COAL VERY LOW.

Discovery to Make Tracks

for Home.

RISK UNREASONABLE

(Received 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day.

A message from the Discovery sent on March 5 says that the ship had failed to obtain further coal, and is returning to Australia.

The ship's position is now latitude 51.20 degrees, longitude 101 degrees. On February 19, following the final landing on Macßobertson Land, the leather held good, but as the coal reserves are very low a further extension of the programme along the Antarctic wast is considered unreasonable.

In any case, to reach Australia the Discovery will have to rely principally 051 her sails.
