PENNANT BOWLING.

LAST-ROUND RESULTS.

SECTION WINNERS.

CARLTON AND ONEHtMGA.

(By TRTJNDLER.)

Seldom tas the last round in the pennants opened with such possibilities as the postponed second round on Saturday last, for in each section there wa3 every likelihood that the leading teams could Be displaced. However, Carlton retained first place in section A, not through a successful day, hut through the collapse of New Lynn when meeting the young club at Hallyburton Johnstone. This also allowed West End to hop into second place, while Avondale and Otahuhu had such a good run that they now tie with Waitemata for fourth place.

In section B the only change in the leading three clubs is that Auckland replaces Ponsonby for third place, in spite of the heavT' losses to Mount Albert and Hillsboro' on the home green. Onehunga did well against St. Helier's, and Papatoetoe against Mount Fden, so they easily retained their respective positions. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the cordial co-operation of those secretaries and other friends who forwarded prompt information in time to display in the 8 o'clock edition on Saturday the positions finally held by the three in each section who led at the completion of the, previous round. The full table is now appended, showing for .each club the number of rinks played, the wins and losses in the postponed second round played last Saturday, the percentage of wins in the whole five rounds, and the percentage of wins up to and including each of the previous four rounds. With the exception of a few clubs still on the same mark as when they had played only one round — Ponsonby, Buckland's Beach and Ellerslie —every club that started off with 50 per cent or over is now on a lower percentage, and every one under 50 per cent is now higher.

This is particularly noticeable in Carlton, Remuera, Glen Eden, New Lynn and St. Helier's, whose percentages have steadily come down, while an equally steady rise has taken place at Waitemata, Otahuhu, Anckland, Mount Albert and Papatoetoe.

The obvious inference is that it would only be necessary to keep on long enough to get them all on about 50 per cent, provided that all followed the policy of those clubs who have entered as high a percentage as possible. This rise and fall is probably not altogether a coincidence, for it is often due to a natural desire of the various selectors to concentrate their best rinks against the leading clubs, and to take liberties with those that are low down. Without going into details, those who are curious on this point may study out for themselves to what extent this was done on Saturday, by examining the results' in this issue. This policy is not altogether a disadvantage, for besides levelling up the position it disposes of the frequent argument that ■ cropped up some years ago, that the good players did not meet worthy opponents. Of course they do, for no selectors would send the same strength of rinks to the little clubs as they do to such as Ponsonby and Onehunga. •

The first two Saturdays in March were reserved for postponements and the final, so Carlton will meet Onehunga next Saturday. Presumably the usual custom will be followed, in that on a neutral green the 12 Onehunga rinks will meet the 12 Carlton rinks selected by ballot from the 22 rinks submitted to the centre executive by the Carlton committee. From the table published on Saturday it would be seen that only once before, since this competition was instituted in 1919, have as many as 12 rinks competed in the 3nal, and there are very few clubs who #an accommodate the number, in addition to their own members. However, wherever it is played, at Epsom, Remuera or Auckland, an assurance can be given that the club members concerned will receive a cordial welcome if they care to spend the afternoon at Carlton or Onehunga, unless they prefer to watch this great final on their own greens.

Club Championships. Apparently the only clubs where the champion has been found are the following:—

_ C l l^ b - Champion. Eunner-up. Takamina rt £ oml . ln ®? 11 J- Stewart laKapuna F. A. Audley c. Cutler u-n n l ey . F- J - Johnson F. J. Hooker Hillsboro G. N. Sainty J. Hollows There are still two left in the Ellersli© championship—E. Longdill with two lives, and C. Lynch with one. The former only started to play bowls last year, so he has done uncommonly well to reach the final in his second year. Xhe four sections at Rawhiti were won outright, Neil Thomson, last year's champion, getting through without a l° s ®- He will now meet F. Vaughan, and E. T. Walker will meet Don Harris to it with the two semi-finals' and the final. The final at Onehunga will probably be played this evening, between J. Kerr with one life, and H. A. Robertson, two Jives, who has given him his only loss ■ At St. Heiicr's, J. Diamond meets H. Wright this evening, each with one life, I and the winner then meets B, Dawson, a two-iifer. The annual pairs tournament will commence to-morrow on five greens, all handy to the giigE, ~
