TAKANINI TRACK. WELLINGTON CANDIDATES GALLOP The inner grass was used at Takanini this morning, which was a quiet one, and there were few horses worked fast.

High Comedy strode nicely over a haltmile in 495. Lord Willonyx and Brazanna were together at the end of three furlongg in 37 l-ss. On the plough Vandyke sprinted three furlongs in 40s. Among H. Gray's mounts at Manawatu will be Karapoti and Esteem. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements are announced for the Wellington meeting, which opens at Trentham next Saturday:— T. Green. —Rostsliire, Paganelli, Simba, Pythia and High Comedy. H. Gray. —Havering, Hawkshaw, Korokio, Karapoti and Hunting Day. R. S. Bagby.—King March, Columba and Chief Joy. H. Dulieu. —Mountain Heath. A PROMISING HACK. The win recorded by Escalus in the Bombay Handicap was full of merit, for the Roiueo gelding made all the running and won comfortably at the finish. He also ran a further good race later in the day in the Buckland Handicap, and both performances stamp him as a promising hack, who is sure to improve with more racing experience. Escalus had been doing good track gallops prior to the meeting and it was very encouraging to his connections to see him reproducing his form in public. He is a sturdilybuilt gelding and one whose condition is still susceptible to improvement.
