GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
IMPROVEMENTS NEAR TAUPERI
DANGEROUS BRIDGE REMAINS,
The Great South Road from Huntly has been tar sealed as far as the Mangawara Bridge, Taupiri, writes the "Star's" Taupiri correspondent. The Taupiri Gorge has been rendered much more safe for motor traffic by the straightening of the road through it.
From Taupiri to Ngaruawahia the road is in a very corrugated condition Tenders for tar sealing this section were called by the Highways Board, and it' is understood that Goosman and C0.,,0f Morrinsville, are the successful 'contractors. Material for the work of forming some parts of the road has been ordered from Ngaruawahia quarry. Button's Hill, which has been the scene of several car accidents, there being a gully on either side of the road, which has a double bend on the hill, is to bo J straightened. Another dangerous bend is at the railway crossing near Hopuhopu military camp. The Mangawara Bridge, it appears, is to be left for the present, although it is to be repaired. It has been the scene of several bad accidents lately, one proving fatal and another nearly so. The tar sealed road that now approaches to within a chain or two of the bridge encourages a speed for traffic that will render the bridge even more of a death trap than previously.
