STREET BETTING.
OLD MAN'S ARREST.
OPENLY TAKING WAGERS.
MINIMUM FINE IMPOSED,
Arrested late on Saturday afternoon by Detective Nalder on a charge of loitering in Durham Street for the purpose of betting, George Frederick Lockley, aged 74, made his appearance at the Police Court this morning. He admitted the charge.
Detective Sergeant Kelly said Constable Jackson observed accused openly betting. Later three detectives watched Lockley openly taking wagers in the street. In fact, two constables made bets with him. "He's an old man, and why he takes this job on I don't know," commented Mr. Kelly. "He's been previously fined £10 "for publishing a double chart, and when arrested on Saturday he had £G on him."
The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, fined Locklcy £10. Detective Sergeant Kelly then pointed out that the minimum fine provided for such a charge was £20. In increasing the fine to £20, Mr. Hunt told Locklcy he had no choice but to inflict the minimum.
One week was allowed in which to pay.
