NEAR TRAGEDY.

HIT BY LIGHTNING.

Nobel Explosive Factory Near Melbourne. WORKERS' TIMELY WARNING. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 3. While a terrific storm was in progress to-day a portion of the explosives factory of the Nobel Proprietary, Limited, at Deer Park, 15 miles from the city, was struck by lightning and wrecked.

A series of violent explosions occurred. These broke every window in the building, also many windows of houses and shops for miles around. The noise of the explosion was heard in some of the distant suburbs.

The workmen at the factory were not on the premises at the time. Having been warned of the approaching storm they had left the acid room, which was destroyed.

Dense volumes of black smoke rose from the ruins and enveloped the entire district. The local hotel was badly damaged, even doors and shelves being displaced. Debris littered every room, but nobody was hurt.

The Defence Department's cordite factory in the same vicinity escaped damage.
