The, quantity of water evaporated and lifted daily into the atmosphere from the seas, lakes and rivers of the world and poured back in rain is supposed to amount to 510 cubic miles. The mean annual fall of rain on the entire surface of the earth is estimated at about sft. To evaporate water enough annually from the oceans, etc., to cover the earth on the average sft deep with rain, to transport it from one zone to another, and to precipitate it in the right places and at suitable times, and in the proportion due, is one of the offices of the sun.
