PAID IN HEROIN.
LABOURERS AT CAIRO. CAIRO, March 1. The police discovered that 30 dock labourers for months were paid in heroin, while the overseers pocketed their wages. The overseers were yesterday convicted. One 'was sentenced to imprisonment for three years and fined £340, the other to imprisonment for two years and fined £300. The labourers received quantities of heroin at each meal and were provided with ramshackle lodgings each night. One overseer had 150 packets of heroin on hin when he was arrested.
