SINKING OF DREDGE.
Inquiry Into Seaworthiness of Vessel. 1 BASS STRAIT FATALITY. (Received 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The seaworthiness of a former Sydney Harbour Trust dredge, the Nereus, 33 years old, which was bought for £535, reconditioned for £400 and then sold again by a private company to the Ulverstone Harbour Board for £4300, was inquired into by a Marine Court. The Nereus was on the way to Tasmania and sank while she was in tow on February 12 off Low Head. Captain Fitzpatri.ck and a member of the crew were drowned.
"ThT evidence disclosed that engine defects developed while the dredge was on tho way to Tasmania. Sho steered badly and was leaking. Some of the members of tho crew declined to continue the voyage and Captain Muir signed off at Eden. Captain Fitzpatrick then took command for tho remainder of the trip.
A navigation officer inspected the dredge at Jarvis Bay and at Eden and passed her as seaworthy.
The hearing of the rase was adjourned
