DERATING OF FARMS.

PROPOSALS APPROVED. TAXATION INCREASES CONDEMNED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OTOROHANGA, Friday. A gathering of 150 farmers held here to-day was addressed by Messrs.. V. Simms, A. E. Robinson (provincial secretary of the N.Z.. Farmers Union), W. A. Lee, J. N. Boddie and W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. Resolutions were carried thoroughly approving of the' derating of farm lands; the condemning of any increase in taxation, unless the proceeds are to be used for reducing the burden on rural ratepayers; and asking that a representative of the Otorohanga County Council be given an opportunity of giving evidence before tbe proposed derating committee. Speakers emphasised the present position in the farming industry as the most serious since the days of colonisation, and said that any agitation to increase primary production must be accompanied by something to keep men on the land. Figures quoted showed that ratepayers' money was going in the upkeep of main highways, and that other roads did not get the attention they should do.
