HAWKES BAY CHURCHES.
NO MONEY FOR REBUILDING. STATEMENT BY ARCHBISHOP. Reference to the work of the Church in the earthquake was made by his Grace, Archbishop Averill, who spoke at a meeting of the Auckland Glergy Association this week. The Archbishop has just returned from a visit to the area. He stressed the fact that there would be no chance of rebuilding the ruined cathedral for many years to come. Many of the parishes had no place of worship that could be used al present and had no money tA put their church into a safe condition. Many of the church people were so badly affected financially that it was impossible in parts of the diocese to make even_ a moderate provision for clergy to maintain the Church's work. Between the earthquake and the drought the Church in Hawke's Say was in a very difficult position, and it was urgently necessary for the other dioceses to come to its rescue. The archbishop added that he had opened a fund to help the Church in Hawke's Bay, to which he hoped church people would respond as liberally as possible.
The clergy present pledged themselves to support the archbishop's _ appeal by making every possible sacrifice themselves and bringing it prominently before their people.
