TENNIS SEMI-FINAL
The Club Championship.— Parnell Plays Campbell Point.-— Bright Men's Singles.
Bright play in the men's singles was, an attractive feature of the tennis at Stanley Street this afternoon, when Parnell played Campbell Park in a semi: final of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association Club championship. Beautiful weather and fast courts were favourable to good play. There was one surprise. It was the decisive win of K. Boardman (Parnell) over P. Jones, 6—l, o—l. Jones was well off his game and missed many chances. Boardman's hard shots beat him comletely. u' ~ In a hard match C. Chalmers gained another Parnell victory by beating A. Porter, 6—4, o—3. Porter "looked likely to win several times but Palmer played more finished' tennis. Greatest interest was aroused in the match in which A. H. Lamb |Parnell) beat G. Martin. It was quite' the best tennis of the section and the long driving exploited • so freely / by both players was delightful to 'watch. Lamb had to contest every 'point, for Martin played really fine tennis. He continually threatened to keep Lamb in sugjection, The first set was taken to and honours were even in the second set, when the net broke just as Martin had moved out of position. Had this accident not occurred Martin would certainly have taken the second set. In the' ensuing play Lamb took the second set <i—s and the match. By beating J. C. Andrews, G. Brown completed Parnell's triumph in the men's singles. Brown's neat; service and his steadiness proved too much for Andrews, who was rather unlucky in not gaining more points with his. more forceful, play and his clever angle shots. Some of Andrews' manoeuvres baffled the winner completely, and Brown invariably endeavoured to keep the match in orthodox channels. In the second set Andrews became, erratic .and the last game was quite a tame victory, for Brown. Parnell proved its superiority in all singles play by capturing every match in the women's singles. All the games were fought sternly, and one, in which Miss Potter beat Miss Bull, produced something of the type of play which distinguished the Lamb-Martin match. Miss Potter owed her win to her coolness under the exceptionally heavy driving of Miss Bull. It was chiefly a base line match, but the occasional volleying was noteworthy. The other tliree matches were prolonged affairs, Miss Leys, Mrs. Herrick and Miss Erankham winning three for Parnell by all-rou>Kl excellence, , although Miss Rukutfti pressed, Miss Erankham severely in both sets. • '.- v Campbell Park Improves. Mixed fortunes were the order in the doubles. In tttese, matches Campbell Park showed to much better advantage but the niatch in which Sheen and .Ward defeated the Parnell pair, Robertson and Pearson, did not produce surprisingly good tennis.
