NEWSPAPER COMMENT.
"HAS LOOKED PACTS IN FACE"
STRONG LEAD HAS BEEN GIVEN.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent)' CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Commenting on the Prime Minister's statement the "Christchurch Times" in an editorial says: "There is no beating about the bush. The Finance Minister found the finances of the country in a bad way when he returned from London and it is obvious that he went straight to work to put them right in the shortest possible time. "There was no prospect of avoiding a deficit for the current year, of course, and most people would have been prepared to find the adjustment spread over a period of two or three years, but Mr. Forbes was evidently in no mood for half measures. There will be plenty of opportunities for discussing the proposals in detail, but in the meantime it may be said that the Government has looked the facts in the face, has tackled the job of adjusting the finances with great courage and has not shrunk from measures that will be highly unpopular. The public, who have looked to the Prime Minister for a strong lead, will agree that he not failed them."
