A NEW LIFE FOR ONE OF LONDON'S OLDEST THEATRES.—The famous old playhouse, Sadler's Wells, in Rosebery Avenue, Finsbury, London, has been converted into a sister theatre.to "The Old Vic" for, the production of permanent opern and classics at low prices, and opened on January 6 with a production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." 'The site' of'Sadler's "Wells' first became famous for the curative properties of its water, taking its name from the surveyor who rediscovered the springs, j With the erection of a wooden "musick house" it became a fashionable resort and was patronised by Queen Elizabeth ahd,Pepys. m In 1765 this wooden structure was replaced by a theatre of brick and Shakespearean plays were produced there. > After '1862 it began to decline, and when it was closed in T916 it was a cinema. Now it ■ < has been rebuilt and is to be r.un in conjunction with the "Old Vic."'
