FASHION NOTES.

REDS TO BE POPULAR.

SCARVES FOR AUTUMN,

(By A PARISIAN EXPERT.)

The first' of the Paris showings prove that there is an unlimited choice of line and period-inspiration in the evening gowns of the present season. Thus, if you have a small waist the Empire-and-Greelc-inspired line is likely to be becoming to you. For girls, the directoire type of frock is very popular. Basques and bustles, even waterfalls appear in fascinating stiff .-taffetas, accomppanied by the long, down sweeping movement to the floor at the back and the grading-up to ankle length in front. ° The fitted hip-line with full, flowing skirt and extreme decolletee to the waist in back is another distinct type of this season's showings. There are variations of this fitted hip idea; shirring is one charming method seen in gowns of light materials, such as chiffon, georgette and net. In satin, velvet, or heavy crepe, one remarks the hip bound by means of a wide sash into the main body of the gown. In some models this sash is made in narrow bands, sometimes outlined with beads, or, if the bands overlap, they are seen to be lined with a contrasting colour and scalloped. In the latter case the scalloped idea is carried out as a finish for the decolletee j at the. skirt-bottom and on the flounce, if the model includes a flounce. Red In New Season's Fashions. There is much red in the new season's fashions, and. it -is - hard to think of a single tone of this : colour that isn't on the programme. . There is wine-red for blondes, and the titian," or golden-brown hair maidens. There, are black cherryreds brownish-rede, lacquer, and rustreds for the girls with dark eyes or hair, or both. There is ' pure currant-red for women witli transparent skin, or white hair, darkest red is- an" inspiring, and at the same time a youthful colour, and many women will wear it for .the most practical occasions, this season, rather than black or any neutral tone." /. The same range of nuances applies to the blues, and there: isn't any excuse for the choice of; midnight blue if lapis, ink-blue, periwinkle or sapphire are more becoming, The blue-eyed girl will choose a blue that is more intense than her eyes, if she is a wise virgin, thus awakening all her sleeping beauty. The brown-eyed girl will look amongst the browns, and will find the dark plumbrown, the rust-brown, or the sealbrown that is deeper than the tone of her eyes a most flattering colour. She who has dull, dark brown hair, can make it look ebon by wearing a lustrous black brightened by white, or warm colour. The one with neutral lightbrown hair will lend it beauty by her choice of red or green to bring out the lights in it. Real Meaning of the Word "Ensemble." There is interdependence between all the component parts of a successful costume, as there has been ever since we have discovered the real meaning of the word "ensemble." It is trite to repeat that the Well-dressed" woman chooses everything she v wears with' proper consideration for everything else, and that one wrong detail may mar a costume irretrievably. At the moment, thei best'daytime shoe is still the perfectly plain pump. * It is seen oftener than anything else, and almost to the exclusion of everything else. It is often of patent leather, and its aim is to make the foot inconspicuous but perfect. The gloves worn by the best dressed women are invariably longer, and pull over the cuff. They also are chosen to complete the costume, repeating one of the colour ljptes. With the new black crepe, afternoon dresses which are actually being so much worn (black, perhaps', as a reaction against the deluge of prints, of summer), the gloves are white suede or antelope when there are white lingerie details on the costume. A pretty Parisienne, seen the other day, looked very smart. She was wearing a black ere do princess frock, buttoned straight up the front to the tip of a "V" shaped neckline outlined in a starched white linen collar edged with ecru tulle. She had gauntlet cuffs of the same, with the wide wrists of her white suede gloves pulled over them, plain patent-leather pumps, dark stockings matching her eun-burnt skin, a black velvet beret, afld close pearl earrings. Exquisite, extremely expensive simplicity still rules in the daytime, you see! ~ The gloves may be blue-fox-colour if a blue fox is worn. When they are dark the stockings match them. Some women who are not sunburned (there are not many), still prefer a lighter shade of hose; then their gloves are lighter, too. But the universal light beige antelope glove is no longer in fashion. Our Sketch. The illustration shows an evening dress in flesh-coloured lace, waxed to give it a certain brilliance. It is made with a round baby-waist, a high belt and a gracefully undulating basque.
