"EXCESSIVE LOSSES."
INTERCOLONIAL TRADE. STEAMERS TO WITHDRAW. MAHENO AND MAUNGANUI. Owing to the abnormal slackness, in trade between New Zealand ai-< Australia, the Union Company has decided to withdraw the passenger steamers Maheno and Maunganui next month. The company states that since the Maheno entered the Melbourne trade, her passenger and. cargo earnings have been quite insufficient to support hei, and the losses in running during recent trips have been excessive. The Maheno is to leave Melbourne on March 5 for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin, and she wiU be withdrawn at Dunedin. It is hoped that conditions in intercolonial trade will have improved sufficiently to justify the resumption of the passenger and cargo service by t.-c Maheno towards the end of the present vear, in order to eater for the require* ments of the tourist traffic during the summer months. In the meantime, a regular cargo service between Melbourne and New Zealand ports will be maintained by a cargo steamer at threeweekly intervals. , . . The Maunganui, now running in tne Sydney passenger service, is to be with' drawn at the same time as the Maheno.
