IMPUDENT THIEF.
PULLED DOWN LARGE HOUSE. J TIMBER CARTED AWAY. A labourer, Leslie Clifford Arthur Payne, who had pulled down a large house in Shortland Street, Auckland, ilftcr a fire, and carted away one load of timber, was sentenced by Mr. Justice Herdman ii the Supreme Court to-day to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. His Honor said: "There was no excuse for your conduct, You wont on the property and, in an impudent way, took timber and arranged for its sale. From 1915, right up to the present time, you have been in and out of gaol the whole time, on many charges of theft, false pretences, breach of probation, and so on. You are awaiting sentence in the Magistrate's Court in respect of charges of thefts from unoccupied dwellings. I suppose you have qualified to be declared an habitual criminal, but I will not declare you now."
