DUNEDIN MEETING.

SPOILED BY WEATHER. SEVERAL SURPRISE WINS. MOUNT BOA TAKES THE CUP. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") DUNEDIN", Thursday. Bad weather caused a slump in the totalisator investments at the opening of th« Dunedin Jockey Club's autumn meeting, a drop of £10,961 being recorded. After heavy rain overnight, the morning. broke fine, but shortly before racing commenced the weather was threatening, and heavy showers wers experienced during the afternoon. The j track was heavy, and tlio public's calculations were upset. Suited by the Going. Though tender behind, Amorist fountl the soft going to his liking, and«>at no' stage did ho look like being beaten in the Autumn Hurdle Handicap. He jumped beautifully throughout. Antrim Boy did not show his usual dash in the going, and if Pangolin had not crashed at the last fence he would have been second. Antrim Boy can be expected to race better on a firmer track. A Fine ,Finish. The Trial Stakes provided a remarkably good finish, five Hashing past the judge almost it: line. Shatter showed stamina to get up to beat the improving Parysia and Appeal in a hard finish. Lord Argosy, an English importation by Mr. J. M. Samson, made ail the runmng, and was only caught in the last few strides. Segrave again failed, while Owlslljght did not finish on. Appeal was lying well back at the top of the straight, and is worth watching. The President's Handicap. 1 Another good finish was staged in the President's Handicap, the Invercargilltratnod Night Rose coming away to stave off a determined challenge from Baliance, ah odds-on f»»purite. Saipshape was in the van litl 80 yards from the post. Night Parade made a forward move with five fuilorgs to go, but his effort was short-lived. He likes a firm track. Backers Well Astray. The public were wide of the mark in their selections for the Publicans' Handicap, as they made Charmaine a so'ii favourite. Having his first race for some time Royal Saxon drew out once the straight was reached to beat Silver Paper home by a head. Silver Paper would probably have won if he had be#n ridden more judiciously at the home bend. In his first race in open company Master Anomaly shaped well, while his stablemate, Compensation, made his run a little too late. Charmaine had every chance, being with Master Anomaly at the head of affairs when they were straightened up for home, but she stopped badly. Confounded the Critics. The late scratching of Nightmarcli, on account of the going, and the defections of First Sight and Gay Crest, robbed the Dunedin Cup of much interest. Yet the race was very interesting. Mount Boa confounded the critics by outstaying the field and coming through to beat Pink Note, who has twice run second since winning the Cup three years ago, fairly comfortably. Mount Boa revelled in the soft going. The worst failure was that of Red Sea, a proved stayer. She has won all her races from behind, but in this race she was kept up near the leader. Too much use was made of her by L. J. Elis. Don Jose was never out of the ruck, but Compris was travelling on at the right end. Shortly set the pace, and was only beaten over the last furlong, while another lightweight in Red Racer showed good form. Black Duke and Admiral Drake were always tailing the field. Mount Boa's win was an easy one, and he was ridden a perfect race by A. H. Eastwood, who always had him at the head of the second division. Won in a Canter. Only three two-year-olds were sent out to race against Fairweather in the Champagiw Stakes. Fairweather continued his winning run by outclassing the opposition to win in a canter from Hula Belle, whose challenge in the straight was quickly answered by the Weatliervane colt. Last March had had enough before the end of five furlongs,

while Ruling Light, after jumping back at the barrier rise, was not sent out after the field. Fairweathcr represents good class. He is a game colt and handles any sort of going. A Boil Over. There was, a boil over in the Stewards' Handicap, the little fancied Wingatui, who had always shown partiality for racing here on a soft track, winning well from Assemble and Barneses. Straight Course did not settle down in the mud, and Camisader was too far back at the home turn. Pride was not sighted, but Miss Mercia was close up at the finish. An Easy Victory. An easy win was scored by Francolin in the Berwick Handicap, the Paper Money —Philomela mare giving nothing a chance over the final furlong. Sharp Thorn, who after this meeting will be transferred by Sir Charles Clifford to the ownership of Mr. W. Norman, of Christchurch, was lying well back at the top of the straight, and finished strongly. Some Queen, a half-sister to Queen Balboa, last year's Dunedin Cup winner, found the distance too far,-while Some Acre was finished with early, aiid Hot Tea missed the jump ~ : i
