WELLINGTON, Thursday. ; Designed to cover combined risk from fire and earthquake shocks, a schedule of earthquake rates was approved today at a conference of the Fire and Accident Underwriters' Associations ofNew Zealand. The tariff drawn up to-day is purely an emergency measure, which will remain until the compilation of a comprehensive earthquake tariff with the collaboration of experts. Three months is mentioned as the.time within which the more extensive tariff will be drawn up.. .In the meantime the rates are divided into two main geographical divisions,: each of which is subdivided into rates for firm ground and for filled or reclaimed ground. For all that portion of New Zealand between degrees and 44 degrees suth latitude as shown on the plan, the following emergency rates apply:— I.—Wood and/or iron frame, firm ground, : 0/per • cent; filled or reclaimed ground, 8/. 2.— (a) Structural steel frame with reinforced concrete throughout; (b) reinforced concrete throughout,. 8/, 12/. 3.—Structural steel frame or reinforced concrete frame with brick, stone or tile walls, 10/, 15/. 4—Brick, stone - or tile without structural frame, .15/, 20/. 7 For all the rest of New Zealand tlie following emergency raites apply: — Construction of buildings: I.—Wood and/or iron frame,. firm, ground, 4/ per cent; filled or reclaimed ground, <6/. 2. —-(a) Structural steel > frame with reinforced colici'ete throughout; (b) reinforced, concrete, throughout, 6/, 'J/. 3.—Structural, steel- frame or reinforced concrete frame with .brick, stone or tile walls, 8/, 12/. 4.—Brick, stone or tile without" structural, franie, 10/, 15/.
