SHARP SHAKE.
SOUTH ISLAND TOWNS. FELT IN SEVERAL DISTRICTS. LITTLE DAMAGE REPORTED. SHOCK OF BRIEF DURATION. (By Telegraph.—-Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A very definite earth tremor, stronger in some parts of the city than any felt since the Murchison-Otira disaster, occurred at about 0.42 this morning. It is reported as having been experienced as.far south as Waihola. The shake was feltmost on the flat. In a -grocery shop, tins at the shelf's edge were thrown to the ground, and in one large drapery store many, girls took refuge under the counters until reassured. " Heavy ledgers were reported to be thrown from the desks in a city office. Other Towns. Queenstown reports: A sharp earthquake shock occurred at 0.40 a.m., of 30 seconds' duration. There was slight damage to several chimneys. Cromwell: • Slight earth tremors, duration about three seconds, cast to west motion, experienced at 9.41 a.m. Pembroke: Slight earthquake shock felt at 9.41-J a.m. by persons indoors, but not outdoors; apparent direction, east to west. Arrowtown: Short, sharp earthquake 9.40 a.m., lasting for approximately ten seconds. No damage is reported. Christcliurch. —The shake was felt here slightly, the only effect being to make the electric lights swing. , ' , Invercargill: Slight earthquake, 0.40. No damage reported..
