STEADILY RISING.

PUBLIC EXPENDITURE. . LONDON, February 11. The problem of the rising cost of social services and the need for cutting down public expenditure is rapidly becoming a live issue in Britain. The "Times" says: "Whatever may be the result of the current financial year, it is already certain that the legislation and administration of the Labour Government will have added more than £30,000,000 to the charges to be met from taxation, and £35,000,000 to the charges improperly met from borrowing, while future commitments will be much heavier. "The national resources arc mortgaged to the hilt. To-day's debate on the Conservative motion of censure on the question of national economies raises the question of whether any political party is really determined to cut down, not only waste, but etatutory commitments."
