SCHOOL SWIMMING.
ASSOCIATION FORMED. CARNIVAL NEXT MONTH.
In March ; last a very successful schools' swimming carnival —the first of its kind —was held in the Tepid Baths. Encouraged by this initial effort, a large number of delegates from public and private primary schools in Auckland and suburbs yesterday decidcd to form an Auckland* Primary Schools Swimming and Life Saving Association. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Education Board; vice-patrons, Messrs. J. Robertson (senior inspector of schools) and Mr. D. Dunlop; president, Mr. Alex. McGregor; vicepresidents. the principal of the Auckland Training College, the presidents of the Headmasters', Assistant Masters' and Women Teachers' Associations; secretary, Mr. C. F. Stratford, Kowhai J.H.S.; treasurer. Mr. E. C. Stretton; committee, Miss Phillips, Messrs. J. Gasparich, H. Binstcd, B. Hayson, Bro. Calhrfus, two instructors in physical training to the district, and one delegate eacb from the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association and the Royal Life Saving Society. It was decided to affiliate the newlyformed body with the New Zealand Swimming Association, and in the forthcoming carnival next month to incorporate four live-saving events in the programme. This proposal had the hearty approval of the Education Board, which will circularise the schools upon the matter, and prior to the competition demonstrations will be arranged in the various swimming baths in city and suburbs. Students from the Training College, who have received , special instruction, will be available for teaching and demonstrating life-saving methods in most of the schools by the end.of the month. All of the principal private schools of Auckland made application for affiliation with the association, and it was unanimously resolved that this be granted. It is intended to hold this year's carnival in March in the Tepid Baths. Mr. Brighton, educational officer to the Auckland Swimming Centre,' explained that in the past all children under 14 years who had. secured certificates for BSO yards had been granted free passes for one year to either Shelly Beach or Parnell Baths, but this year, owing to the City Council having undertaken a reconsideration of its policy in connection with municipal baths, the passes for the successful 1930 candidates had not yet been issued. ~
