SECOND RELIEF SCHEME.
BOARD TO SPEND FURTHER £2500. SUBSIDIES TO EMPLOYERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Unemployment Board received official authorisation to-day to spend a further £2500 under the second relief scheme, by which pound for pound subsidies are granted to private employers up to 7/ a day.
The board has spent a total of £00,000 under its emergency relief schemes introduced for the holiday period. The first and second schemes absorbed £50,000 and the hoard also gave a further £10,000 by way of free grants. Satisfaction is expressed at the working of the second scheme, especially since it became better known in country areas. It is pointed out that the scheme gives an for undertaking'dcvelopmental work, although it must not be work that would be done in the ordinary course. It is now possible for commitments under the scheme to be made up to the end of next month and work under the scheme may be carried out until the end of March, instead of until the end of February, as previously stipulated.
Applications for assistance under this scheme are being received by the board' in large numbers. It was reported today that local committees numbering 110 had already been formed in various parts of the country and their work was regarded as being of the utmost importance.
