PICKS AS WEAPONS

French Miners' Duel for Hand of

Village Girl.

FIGHT UNDERGROUND

PARIS, January 21

An extraordinary duel was fought between two miners in a colliery at St. Etienne.

The two men were rivals for the hand of a village girl and they decided to settle their claims in the workings of the mine. The duel was fought with picks in the light of two lamps 800 feet underground.

After 20 minutes one of the combatants, Jaques Roche, fell mortally wounded with a deep gash in his head. The other man ascended to the surface and fled.
