MURDER OF SON.

Father Acquitted in French

Trial. •>

JURY'S STRANGE ATTITUDE

(Received 11 a.m.)

PARIS, January 21

The proverbial uncertainty of the jury system was illustrated at the Seine Assizes when a stonemason named Thill was charged with murdering his 19-year-old son, whom he shot while asleep. It was-admitted that the father was a drunken ne'er-do-well and that the son was constantly upbraiding him for it. , The defence was that the son was just as bad as the father. The jury askeu what the punishment would be if a verdict of guilty with extenuating circumstances was returned, and the judge said at least five years' gaol. The jury decided that wa-s too severe and brought in a verdict of acquittal.
