NEW SLOGAN.
"Spend More Money' , to Help
Unemployment.
ANTI-THRIFT CAMPAIGN.
(Received 2 p.m.)
LONDON, January 18.
A campaign Avhich was begun during war time in favour of thrift and was supported by practically every national leader has continued to the present uninterruptedly. Now the reverse campaign has begun in favour of more spending and less thrift in order to stimulate trade.
Wireless listeners last week were surprised to. hear the economist, Mr. John Maynard Keyncs, talk in this strain. The "Sunday Express' , follows up with an article headed "Housewives Can Wipe : Out Unemployment," "Thrift Complex is Killing Industry."
The writer asserts that if everyone spent 10 per cent of his savings on British ?made goods, there would be no unemployment. He points out that despite' all unemployment the national income has increased in the- last sis years by £1,500,000,000. As a result of intensive thrift the nations savings, excluding oversea investments and Government stock, aggregate £3,600,000,000 or £80 per capita.
