FARMER'S QUEER ACTIONS.
CHEQUES ISSUED FOR CARS
VAGRANCY CHARGE FOLLOWS,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
Among the extraordinary things done by Thomas Edward Preston (26), described as a farmer, was the ordeiin<* of all kinds of goods for his marriage, although he had no marriage in view. Preston was charged before Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., this morning, with being an idle and disorderly person. The magistrate, after commenting on accused's queer past, sentenced him to three months' imprisonment, with hard labour. Mr. Young suggested luat the prison authorities should have tne man examined to inquire into his mental condition.
The chief detective said that accused had come up from Dunedin on license, and, during a month's visit, had been staying- at different places. Although he had no money he called at the Dominion Motors and gave them a cheque for £400 for a car of which he never took delivery. He repeated the process with. Ford Motors, Ltd. At the time of his arrest Preston was negotiating for the purchase of furniture.
