NEW ZEALAND VERSE.

THE CHANCE WORD.

Odd how In ore chance word a whole world may be told, And I can see again a silver birch, a poplar gold; A line of birches on the sky, slim silver 'gainst the blue, And golden lights of poplars in a land that once I knew.

Now I have left them far behind, yet watching harbour mist That sweeps and eddies silver grey, I keep again my ti-yst, And fog and wind-and rain are gone, and, on iny quiet face The sun is warm as once it was in that still, lovely place.

Where cool with silver 'gainst the blue, the birches tossed faint sigh From their bright restlessness of leaves to the pure arching sky. And grave and tall the poplars stood, lit with that running gold Whose bright fires quickening at a word n my longing heart still hold.' Auckland. , SECOND FIDDL3.
